‘Dance Moms’…the name says it all. ‘Dance Moms‘ is an American reality show that was debuted on Lifetime in 2011. Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, mothers take their children to join Abby Lee Dance Company’s Junior Elite Competition Team. [See the current cast here.] The show is filled with drama, dancing and entertainment. With the success behind the show, there has been seven seasons with the eighth one on the way…until Abby Lee backed out.
During the early hours of Monday (March 27) morning, Abby Lee Miller went to Instagram, @therealabbylee, to quit ‘Dance Moms’.
The post, in full, read:
“The majority of children that follow me may be fast asleep, however now is the critical time to make the following statement: I WILL NO LONGER TAKE PART IN DANCE MOMS. FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS/ SEVEN SEASONS I HAVE ASKED, BEGGED, AND EVEN DEMANDED CREATIVE CREDIT FOR ALL THE IDEAS, AWARD WINNING ROUTINES, THEMES, AND COSTUMING – TO NO AVAIL! TODAY, I WAS SO PROUD THAT I WENT AGAINST THE PRODUCER’S IDEA (ONCE AGAIN) TO ENTER A COMMAND PERFORMANCE OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE NUMBERS… “WHERE HAVE ALL THE CHILDREN GONE?” ALONG WITH THREE BEAUTIFUL SOLOS! I don’t have a problem working with any kid, I love children and have dedicated my life to making other people’s children successful! I JUST HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BEING MANIPULATED, DISRESPECTED, AND USED – DAY IN AND DAY OUT BY MEN WHO NEVER TOOK A DANCE LESSON IN THEIR LIVES AND TREAT WOMEN LIKE DIRT! #dancemoms #season7 #ALDC #aldcalways #newbeginnings #aldcla #allloveddancecourage”
For someone unfamiliar with the show, its history, and current legal drama, this post from Miller may seem like a very sad and unfortunate ending to a successful show. However, there is some background information that may change that thought.
In October 2015, Abby Lee Miller was charged with attempting to hide $755,000 of income from ‘Dance Moms’ and her spin-off, ‘Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition’ during Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The money was apparently stowed away in a secret bank account. In addition, this past January she ran into some issues in with having to forfeit $120,000 in Australian currency that she snuck into the country. For all of this, she is facing over 20 cases of fraud and will hear her sentencing around early May this year.
Uh, yikes, Ms. Miller. That’s not a very good problems to have lurking in the shadows. Some articles are thinking that this whole ‘quitting’ ordeal was a ploy to take attention away from the many legal issues she has been facing. Who would be surprised by that? Things like that happen all the time when money comes into play. At least she still has her fans…right?
Some are saying, “RIGHT!”…
While others are saying, “eh, not so much.”
Overall though, yes – it is sad that the show is ending and it is sad that the main drama starter just quit the show. But we all know how this works out: Lifetime will find either a new dance company or a new show all together and ratings and money will start coming right back in. Maybe this was a good thing for us Lifetime watchers. Maybe we will get an awesome new show we didn’t even know we wanted! I guess we will have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out!
